I EXIST AGAIN!!!
Wow ... does anyone still read this thing?
Anyway, time for a bit of a recap. I just got back in from E3, and I'm staying awake now to re-adjust my sleep schedule. I never thought I would actually be able to go to E3. I still remember being a kid and seeing images in video game magazines and now, due to my job, I got to go. What was it like?
Nearly religious actually. I got to meet all the big internet celebrities, famous gamers, and I shook Miyamoto's hand. I was talking with big name game developers, voice actors, and even Leonard Nimoy as if they were my equals. I'm not easily star struck, but these were people I looked up to since I was a kid. I barely even knew how to react. Hell, the Angry Video Game Nerd even used my "cream my pants" line in his E3 run down.
I wish I could remember all the games I played. I took audio notes on them, but it would be crazy to go back now, when I'm so tired to listen to them all. All in all I must have played like 50 games, all of which wont be coming out for months of years. I felt important ^_^.
I have SO much to tell. You'll probably be angry at me for ranting about it for weeks to come. However, now I sleep and bask in the convention after-glow. |

I have to issue a public apology to my friends. Using what knowledge I had, I recommended the Xbox as the better gaming system. It had the superior versions of rockband, full support of Valve software, and was what bandai+namco was going to develop on for tales games.
Now, some years later, bandai+namco jumps ship to wii, steam is coming to macs, and the Persona team has signed up with sony for the ps3 making it start to pull ahead in my opinion. |

The problem with beating Final Fantasy XIII ... I know there simply won't be another game that I like this much coming out for a while. I was, in a word, stunned. I mean, I wasn't like that in my review of FF XIII cause I needed to be more obejctive and professional, but from a pure fanboy level, I was just so... very stunned by the whole experience. It never fails to amaze me how well the Square team can craft stories.... and it is equally as amazing that they can put out such shitty titles right alongside stuff like this.
Now I guess we just wait for Versus XIII eh?
Oh well, Valkyria Chronicles and Heavy Rain in the mean time. |

So I do this thing where I have long conversations about video games and sociology with my friends inside their cars outside of my house before I get out to go back inside. Sometimes these conversations end up being an hour long. Yeah, it's weird. Anyway, the other night, my Dad saw me having one of these conversations with Rob. It's common knowledge that Rob has a crush on me, and it was cold and I was yelling alot (since it was BlazBlue related) so the windows got foggy. I'm SURE he thinks I'm gay now, which is HILARIOUS! Let's be more direct here.
I've been into fighting games lately, mostly because a lot of good ones have come out recently. Unfortunately, I have very few people to play against. With Rob most likely moving away this summer I find that my competitive gaming play group now involved Kirk and .... uhhhh ..... uhmmmmm...
So yeah... Kirk.
So I'm gonna come right out and say it. I want to start fostering a group of people that is at least vaguely interested in competitive video gaming. There are a LOT of competitive games out there, with my most latest obsessions being Brawl+, Tatsunoko VS Capcom, and most of all Blazblue.
I also think that this is a great opportunity to see friends that I don't normally see and connect with them in ways I haven't before.
So who here in livejournal land is actually interested in say, picking up and learning/playing Blazblue with me? We can get rotation matches going, get a whole gang together with snacks and stuff. It will be like the oldschool hangouts back at the dem.

Playing No More Heroes 2 made me miss Renee coming on line for a short while around 10 oclock today.
For those of you who don't know, Renee's phone has been turned off and i have been missing her like woah. I talked to her earlier but I didn't know she was coming back on. I instinctively just went downstairs when I got back from hanging with kirk and jay cause .. well fuck... I have No More Heroes 2.
But I really do miss her and I wish I could have known. I would have been here and spent every moment I could with her. Damn you Suda 51. Damn you for making such an addicting game.

I have something random to post.
A few days ago, I was told I was wasting my life as a gamer. This wasn't by anyone I knew. This wasn't by friends, family, or co-workers. No, it was by a random person at Barnes and noble. I was in the gaming section and he was nearby checking out other books. He looked over at me browsing the strategy guides, for no good reason really because its not like I was gonna buy any, holding up a book on, idk I think it was some programming language, and asked if I was a fan of games. When I eagerly responded, thinking I could strike up a conversation (having had recent doubts at my ability to make new friends) his retort, was to tell me I was wasting my life on child's toys, laugh, and then walk away.
Now, I'm used to dealing with random assholes ... I really am, but this got to me. Why? It was so pointless. I'm sure the man was insecure and making himself feel better. I'm sure I've had plenty of fulfilling life experiences he can't even compare to. I'm sure ... well I'm sure there are any number of things I could say to make myself feel better ... but I don't.
Maybe I am just waxing poetic on this but ... how socially retarded are we as a country, a people, a species, that people look down on others for the things they like doing in their spare time. God, it seems like we have come so far in stressing how equal every race, religion, gender, and sexuality are, but there are still people out there, grown adults, that think they are better than you because you like to pick up a controller and amuse yourself digitally. Hell ... all he did was shout NEEEEEERD in my face in more words.
Sometimes when I am in a political or philosophical mood I wonder why it is that certain people seem to be so hateful. I've said that I think the natural state of humanity is "asshole" before, but when I think on it, it really depresses me to think that this is the face of humanity, random people who will look down on you just for enjoying a game.
We have a long way to go. A looooong way to go. Hell, if you can't stand up and say "I play video games and I am proud of it" without being criticized, we have no hope for the more serious things like race, religion, and sexuality. I am reminded of the time when I applied for a game analyst job right out of college, and was told that "someone so engrossed in gamer culture is a bad representation for the company" before I was turned down. Yeah, you can't work at a gaming company and like video games. What a pisser.
i should have pointed at him and spouted that Child's Play raises millions of dollars for sick and dying kids every year, what the fuck has he done. I didn't though. I hung my head and walked away. I let him have his laugh. Maybe one day I can phone up a friend and say "lets play some BlazBlue" and not feel guilty about winning, losing, making better or worse use of my time, pleasing the people around me, and conforming to every other possible societal norm. Maybe one day I can just ... I don't know ... have fun. That day isn't today though.
Maybe I am wasting my life on video games. At least I am not wasting my life on telling other people they are wasting their lives. |

Ok, so good news and bad news. The bad news is the new american soundtrack for Tatsunoko VS Capcom BLOWS GOATS. Much in the veing of One Piece they have removed the pretty decent j-rock theme song with some sort of horrible american rap mashup. Balls. First Marvel VS Capcom 2 and now this, what is with awesome fighters having piss poor soundtracks.
The good news, trailer has gameplay footage of Frank West and Tekkaman Blade. Tekkaman Blade looks to be your standard ranged character, but Frank West looks awesome! One of his supers is to put the Kobun head on someone and beat the piss out of him. Another one is to put on the full Megaman X outfit and shoot the megabuster! Beyond that he attacks with shopping carts and umbrellas and all sorts of awesome improvised weaponry! He looks like an awesome character to play, and why not? He's covered wars you know.

Smash Brothers has been revived for me, becuase the true sequel has finally been released.
I have been introduced to Brawl+, an unofficial fan patch for Brawl. What does it do you say?

In short though it makes Brawl what it should have been from the get go. First of all, charactes have been rebalanced. No game is truly balanced of course, but now every character is much more viable. The game is sped up, and feels more melee speed, but melee exploits like wavedashing, chainthrowing, and other hoohah garbage have been left out. Characters no longer trip, in fact tripping is removed all together for anything but moves that specifically make you do it (like Diddy's bananas). Most stages now have the option to have their random wackyness turned on an off at whim. This means that serious matches can be played on the new PKMN stadium, or hell any new stage really. In addition the wi-fi waiting room is now a selectable stage. It's like a bigger final destination with the constantly appearing sandbag that hoses projectile spam. Characters no longer sweet spot the ledge so edge guarding is important again. Hell the whole game has just been tweaked to be "better".
Characters have their own specific tweaks too now that they are rebalanced. Marth has his range back, while Sheik can KO with her forward air again. Gannondorf has had a TOTAL overhaul and is now a very VERY playable character for reasons too many to list hee, the least of which being the ability to deflect projectiles with his crotch (his up+a has limited super armor and deflects projectiles now). Quite frankly, if you have a favorite character he is better, he just plays better. Even characters like Metaknight that got the nerf stick now COMBO BETTER to make up for it.
Also all pokemon can be selected independnatly on the character selection screen, as can zero suit samus.
Essentially fans got together and decided to make the brawl they wanted to see, and it is here.
Experiencing this has totally made me want to install HBC and Gecko on my Wii just so I can play it with friends.
I REALLY hope they have a Brawl+ station at AUSA or NYAF.
Oh also of note, Brawl + along with another add in called Project Smash Attack allows for new characters to be added too. There are "boss" versions of all the characters we know and love, and also certain characters like Mewtwo and Roy come back. Not to mention there are totally new characters like baby mario and luigi, shadow, and yes, even characters from final fantasy.
Also of note there is another hack called Balanced Brawl which keeps Brawl physicall as is... ie slower, less gravity, much less hectic physics, but balances characters as well, including a huge redo to gannondorf. I plan on loading both versions of brawl onto my wii. |

Ok guys. So we managed to argue for equal rights for pokemon, we hit the defense of yagami light out of the park, we used our double pedophilia moonphase case at Otakon. Now the question is... what do we do next?
We have approximatley 4 more sessions of parliament before the end of the year. 1 at NYAF, 2 at AUSA, and if Mokucon gets off their asses 1 there as well, this means we need at least 4 cases that make the audience laugh groan and cry.
I GOT NOTHING GUYS! The only case I have is ID tags for jesus. Does anyone have any ideas? |

Melee, Guilty Gear, and Marvel Versus Capcom 2 were played endlessly with large groupes of people. Now I can't find one other person willing to play me in BlazBlue or even better Tatsunoko VS Capcom. Has everyone I know gotten old? Like, seriously everyone I know regards these games as "fuck, I don't want to spend effort to play another fast paced game." Really? Does it really take THAT much effort to learn another Capcom versus game? God guys I'm playing with fuckin strangers here. I know for a fact I'll purchase TVC as soon as it hits our shores and no body is going to play with me.
2. What happened to social gaming period? It feels like in the past few months there has been this push in my friend groups AGAINST playing videogames in a social setting. This of course has led to more board gaming, card gaming, and just plain talking, but fuck I remember a time when we all used to grab a drink and play some tales of vesperia until our eyes were bleeding, or fuck playing match after match of any fucking game until we were tired of it, even if it wasn't the most balanced game out there, like that bleach wii game. Now it just seems like our choices are rock band or nothing, and although I like rock band, it gets old.
3. Speaking of tales of vesperia, I was watching bonus round today, and they said that japanese RPGs are better off played single player. They cited tales of vesperia as an example, and said that the game doesn't get any more fun with more people, because any grinding or question you do is essentially the same with or without people on your team. Bull Shit I Say! Our massivley long Tales of Vesperia campaign was clutch! I can't wait for TAles of Graces to come out so we can do it again |
